From the Forth to the Clyde

My father’s grandmother, Mary Bell Philip, was born in Leith, Midlothian, but came to Greenock with her parents as a child. Some of her story and ancestry is at http://wyrdswell.co.uk/ancestors/Additional/Philip.html - part of my older website. Here I’ll be putting more details and stories.

This section, however, begins with a more remote (possible) relative, Robert Philip, grocer in Leith, whom I came across when looking at the births of Philp or Philip children in Leith in the early 19th century. This Robert had a brother James, who became a wright and cabinet maker in Broughton (Edinburgh). In what follows there are many Roberts, Jameses and Davids!

Added - continuing the story of James Philp, ship carpenter in Leith, grandfather of Mary Bell Philip.
